The movement of Hostelling International was born in Germany in 1908. An elementary school teacher, who worked in a miner’s town, was worried about his student’s health, so he had the idea of organizing trips to the country for them. At the beginning there were no hostels, so they stayed at schools that were empty because of the weekend or holydays. The trips became so popular that in 1909 was created the first permanent hostel of the world.  It was a medieval castle that is still functioning as a hostel in the present time. This idea became even more popular and during the decade of 1920 that it spread all over Europe and between the 30’s and 50’s it spread to the rest of the world. In Argentina it started in 1953.

Hostelling International has over 4200 hostels in 80 different countries in Europe, America, Asia, Africa and the Pacific. Their objective is to offer lodging based on god quality service.
